Littleton, CO – a city that spans three counties and spreads it civic aura over a wider area still – has a proximity to downtown Denver (nine miles from downtown’s Civic Center) that has become a huge asset as the sports, entertainment and cultural attractions in the central business district reach unprecedented popularity. But Littleton also has its own downtown, one with much of the same classic American look as Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A. – now luring its own appreciative audience of restaurant goers.
As with Denver’s, the town’s history dates from the 1858 Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. By the 1960s other major metropolitan areas with that pedigree were knocking down relics from that period and paving them over -- but Littleton successfully protected much of its double-main-street (Main Street, and Alamo) from the wrecking ball: among other works, the Arapahoe County Courthouse (c. 1910), the Batschelet mercantile building, 1872 J.D. Hill General Store (now shops), 1927 Town Hall Arts Center (once a fire station and jail), 1906 First National Bank, 1917 beaux-arts Carnegie Library by Jacques Benedict at the foot of Main (now the Melting Pot restaurant), and both of its vintage railroad depots -- the Denver-Rio Grande and the ATSF. One is now another art center; the other is fittingly a part of Littleton’s downtown RTD Light Rail station with service into downtown Denver.

The Littleton real estate market really offers something for every proprestive homebuyer. Downtown Littleton spawned surrounding neighborhoods, including some historic homes that have managed to survive, and that have drawn some newer townhome and loft projects. The residential becomes more expensive as you head south toward what today is Highlands Ranch.
The rolling countryside south along Windemere and Prince Streets sprouted very attractive neighborhoods that still retain that appeal today. West across the Platte River and the D&RG tracks, Columbine Country Club staked a respected position among Denver country club areas, and drew surrounding custom home development that continues today.

That’s not to count a half-dozen scenic golf courses that followed Columbine Country Club into the area, some private (Golf Club at Ravenna by Jay Morrish), others public or semi-private (Arrowhead Golf Club by Robert Trent Jones, and Meadows Golf Club operated by the Foothills Park & Recreation District. And there’s the Highline Canal Trail itself, running 66 miles from a diversion dam in the foothills, wandering through Littleton’s neighborhoods, before heading downstream toward south Denver and the plains.
