The development of the community began around 1889 by the former president of the Colorado Central Railroad, W.A.H. Loveland, and Charles Welch, when they platted an area along West Colfax Avenue. Lakewood was incorporated much later, in 1969, when the population of the area was already over 90,000 residents. The city’s current population is slightly over 140,000 residents, making it the 4th most populated city in Colorado. The city’s area covers roughly 42.5 square miles. Lakewood is home to many quiet and beautiful neighborhoods, some older, some newer, some less expensive, some more expensive.Lakewood is located approximately 7 miles west of downtown Denver, and is easily accessed by the 6th Ave. Freeway for an easy commute to work downtown, the Denver Tech Center (via I-25.), or the Denver West Business Park (via Colfax Avenue). Denver International Airport is approximately 30 miles from this city providing convenient commuting when traveling for business or leisure.
