The development of the community began around 1889 by the former president of the Colorado Central Railroad, W.A.H. Loveland, and Charles Welch, when they platted an area along West Colfax Avenue. Lakewood was incorporated much later, in 1969, when the population of the area was already over 90,000 residents. The city’s current population is slightly over 140,000 residents, making it the 4th most populated city in Colorado. The city’s area covers roughly 42.5 square miles.
